First Impressions
Ask students to look at the pictures of the two students and make a list of five words they think best describe each student. Elicit feedback by asking the following questions:
- Which boy do you think is more likely to be honest?
- Which boy do you think is more likely to be mean?
- Which boy do you think is more likely to be a good friend?
- Which boy do you think is a better student in school?
Do they see one boy as an honor student who makes straight As? Do they see the other boy as struggling in several subjects? Is one of the boys a bully? The point is they simply can't tell just by looking at them.
Correlate this type of in-person first impression with that of the online first impression. When people meet online for the first time, one of the first things people see are usernames. People will form opinions about users based on their usernames. Discuss how important it is to think about what impression a student is making with their username.
