Cyberbully Statistics

  1. Over 80% of teens use a cell phone regularly, making it the most common medium for cyber bullying.
  2. 68% of teens agree that cyber bullying is a serious problem.
  3. 81% of young people think bullying online is easier to get away with than bullying in person.
  4. Girls are about twice as likely as boys to be victims and perpetrators of cyber bullying.
  5. About 75% have visited a website bashing another student.

10 Tests That Help You Judge Your Actions

Use these rules of thumb to help judge your actions online.  Don't become a cyber bully or ruin your or someone else's reputation because you didn't think first.
1. The Golden Rule- Are you treating others the way that you would want to be treated? 
2. The Golden Rule 2.0- Are you treating others the way that they would want to be treated?
3.The Laws and Policies Test- Does what you're doing violate a law or school policy?
4. The Everybody Test- What if everybody is doing the same thing that you are?
5. The Offline Test- What is the real-world equivalent of what you are doing?
6. The Real Name Test- If you're engaging in a behavior anonymously, think about whether you would do the same if you name would be attached to the behavior.
7. The Emotion Test- Are you doing something to someone because you are angry, jealous, or otherwise emotionally charged?
8. The Whole World Test- Would you be comfortable with the whole world knowing what you are doing?
9. The “Get It?” Test- Is what you are trying to say hard to convey online?  Might it be misinterpreted? 
10. Your Test- Consider how what you are doing reflects on you as a person.

No one can tell you how to be a good digital citizen, but using these tests might help you decide whether the behaviors you're engaging in are consistent with your own values.
